Charcoal Water Filter

A charcoal water filter is an excellent way to purifiy and clean away undesirable materials from the water before your family uses it for cooking, drinking, and bathing.  Activated charcoal is highly absorbent and is a common material used for removing impurities from tap water.  Charcoal filtration is very effective and is based on a simple system.  Because of these two qualities it should be at least one process that you use in the purification of your drinking water.

Activated carbon is very popular and used in many types of systems.  You will find it in such diverse places as household aquariums to small pitcher type water filters to home filtration systems.  In the first stage of purification you will find that the better quality filtration systems will use a multi-stage filtration process along with an activated charcoal water filtration purifier.

The water filtration process operates by absorbing contaminants in the water.  The activated charcoal is a type of carbon that has been chemically altered by adding oxygen to create small pores that absorb unwanted contaminants.  This process has been discovered to be really effective in removing micororganisms and foreign chemicals from the water that you use for drinking, cooking, and bathing.  Other types of water filters that use the process of reverse osmosis are simply not as effective in removing synthetic chemicals, like the ones that are commonly found in herbicides and pesticides, as the process of activated carbon water filtration systems.

Another good thing about these types of systems is that they are really good at filtering other types of organic impurities including carbon-based chemicals and chlorine.  Chlorine is often added to water to kill biological contaminants.  This technology is so good in fact that the United States Environmental Protection Agency has recognized actviated carbon as the best way to remove contaminants from water.

Charcoal water filter systems should be installed on all faucets that are used in your home for drinking or bathing in water.  If you use the water from bathroom sinks for drinking water you will probably want to place a filter on those faucets as well.

You can buy charcoal water filters for coffee makers too.  Cuisinart makes replacement filters for their coffee makers.  Another area of the house to consider is the shower.  You will want to get a filter for all shower heads in your home.  This will reduce exposure of your skin to contaminants and reduce their absorption into your body.  This will also reduce the contaminants that you might inhale from the water vapor produced during a shower.

While the charcoal water filters are effective they do not last forever.  Once the pores of the charcoal are full you should replace the filter.  The prices for replacement water filters vary based on several factors.
